While many people want to donate their organs and tissue for transplantation, age, health status or cause of death may preclude this. Transplantation is not the only option for those who wish to be a donor. They can also donate to medical research and education.
Without medical research and education, advances in medicine would not be possible. The Alabama Organ Center has a very active research program. Organs and tissue donated for research may be utilized at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the International Institute for the Advancement of Medicine (IIAM), National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI) or other reputable research organization.
The process is coordinated through the Alabama Organ Center like organ and tissue donation for transplantation. Donation for research can occur following the recovery of organs and tissues for transplant or as a research-only donor depending on the circumstances.
Questions about Research Donation:
Is there any cost?
No. There is no financial cost to donate for research. All charges directly related to donation are paid by the Alabama Organ Center.
Are there any reasons someone would not be accepted as a research donor?
Yes, but they are rare. The Alabama Organ Center evaluates each potential donor to determine the suitability of the donation. If you are interested in donating, please indicate your wishes on Legacy Organ & Tissue Registry and share your decision with your family.
